Oh She Glows Blogtour: Chia Smoothies, Chocolate Cake & Ten Special Questions with Angela Liddon

I don’t know about you, but the matter of what blogs folks are reading is an all-too-frequent topic of conversation in my life. I’m forever curious and fascinated by what vegan blogs people I know are actually enjoying and really, totally obsessing over. (Hellooo PPK and Thug Kitchen). In recent years, there’s been a big stand out in answers to my query: the gorgeously photographed Oh She Glowsespecially among my friends who love their smoothies. Hold up, we’ll get to that.
And let me be cut to the chase here: Angela Liddon, the woman behind the radiant blog and brand new, self-titled cookbook, seems to legitimately glow. I met her at Vida Vegan Con 2 and had the recent chance to pick her brain in a really fun interview, and I’ve gotta say: It’s not an act. It’s apparently just a really, really good attitude and deep appreciation for kale. That, and the art of the smoothie.

As you can probably guess, a copy of the stunning Oh She Glows Cookbook came my way so I could join in on the cookbook tour, and here we are. Maybe it’s silly, but I don’t seem comfortable writing a cookbook review unless I’ve spent a minimum of 11 or so months getting to know it (which never happens at that point), so I’ll be sharing what I’ve dished out so far, and by that, I mean blended and baked, in addition to a very special interview. Below, we talk vegan culinary trends, the future of blogging, favorite recipes and what vegetables we contemplate wearing.

I’ve also included photos for the Gym Rat Smoothie, Cheerful Chocolate Smoothie, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, and massive Chocolate Fudge Cake with rich, Chocolate Avocado Frosting. Enjoy!

Ten Very Special Questions with Angela Liddon of Oh She Glows:

1. Let’s get real: If you’ve been reading a blog within the past 30 days, you’ve probably noticed that cauliflower is being hailed as the ‘new kale’. Those buffalo cauliflower wingz remain everywhere!. What do You think is the next big vegan food trend?

I heard about cauliflower being the new kale and I was a bit surprised because I thought cauliflower was really big the past couple years (remember all the cauliflower rice and pizza crust recipes everywhere?) Anyway, what the heck do I know. I have no idea what the next trend will be, but I’m going to go out on a limb (weed?) and say dandelion will be the next big green. It’s said to be majorly detoxifying, aids with digestion, and reduces inflammation. I like to put it in my smoothies when I’m feeling hard core.

Obey the Classic Green Monster. Photo & beverage by J. Legume, for J. Legume.

2. You mention dreaming about smoothies in your new cookbook. What other foods do you dream about? Do feel free to get graphic.

A creamy, luxurious vegan mac and cheese is always at the top of my dream list!

3. What was your favorite recipe in 2007?

You are assuming I know what I did yesterday? Well, I wasn’t much of a cook back then (I didn’t teach myself how to cook until I started my blog late in 2008), but my biggest food discovery in 2007 would have to be avocado! My husband and I were on a trip to Mexico and I fell in love with their guacamole. The rest is history!

4. What cuisine inspires you the most?

I’m pretty obsessed with Mexican cuisine. I could eat it every day.The more spice the better. Many of the recipes are naturally vegan or they can be adapted quite easily which is always a bonus in my books.

5. Who are your cooking idols?

Eric Tucker, renowned chef from Millennium restaurant in San Fran, is at the top of my list. I had the pleasure of meeting him and experiencing his menu at Millennium last year. He creates fresh and unique ingredient pairings, beautiful presentation, and everything obviously tastes incredible.

I’m also a big fan of Isa Chandra Moskowitz, like the rest of the world. Her recipes are creative and reliable, not to mention infused with her great sense of humour!

6. What was your favorite recipe of last week?

Blueberry Banana Spelt Muffins! My husband and I arm wrestled for the last one and then he split it with me and let me pick the bigger half. haha.

7. Speaking of bloggers, as a Vida Vegan Con alumni, what do *you* think the future of vegan blogging holds?

I think blogging is moving toward a lot more video content. It’s a goal of mine to bring back video to the blog in the next year!

8. What’s been the most memorable vegan restaurant meal you’ve enjoyed in the past decade?

Millennium, without a doubt!

9. Would you wear a dress made out of kale?

Um heck yes. I debated it last Halloween actually and then I remembered I suck at costume planning. Wait, let’s do cauliflower instead since it’s so trendy right now. That could be disastrous…You’ll do it along side me, right? ;)

10. What’s your current win-them-over vegan potluck dish?

My Life-Affirming Warm Nacho Dip from my cookbook. It’s oil-free and vegan, but no one will believe it. Party guests will hunt you down for the recipe and talk about it the entire party…no joke.

Here’s what I’ve made so far from The Oh She Glows Cookbook:

=

Overnight oats and a rainy walk to the bus stop

Cheerful Chocolate Smoothies

Smoothies & Succulents, slowly invading our dining table

The Classic Green Monster, photo & beverage by J. Legume, for J. Legume

Homemade oat flour, to get the party started

Guess who’s eating cookies for breakfast this week? We totally are.

These cookies are gluten-free, as the vast majority of recipes in the book are. I did sub peanut butter for the almond butter called for in this recipe, in addition to coconut and soymilks where almond milk is called for across the book, due to my own allergies.

Crispy Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, check

I can’t tell you how shocked I was to see J. Legume devour more than one gluten-free cookie. Wait, that’s me. Still shocked, and equally impressed with the crinkle action.

Best for last?

Well, I’m coming home to that cake.

Indeed.

  1. Jess you are all kinds of awesome. Thank you so much for your review! I’m so happy to see all the things you are whipping up from the book. You also have to have the most unique interview questions…so much fun! xo, cauliglow

  2. Fun post, fun questions! I’m not a regular reader of Oh She Glows, but the posts I’ve read were great and most especially, the 3 or 4 recipes that were recommended to me turned out to be amazing. I have way too many cookbooks, but if I decide to buy another one this year, it will be this one.

I thought you were only allergic to cashews =/
