Photo Essay #703: BloLo Brunch & Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti

One of my favorite, least-cohesive type of updates.

Over the course of this past slammin’ weekend, I saw the Mayor at a brew pub, dined with friends at Taqueria Los Gorditos: The Restaurant, tried out a new karaoke spot, baked biscotti, finished The Comeback (delightful!), sipped a couple local microbrews on the engaging, Pretzel Necklace™ NW Portland Brewpub Crawl, baked more biscotti, baked even more biscotti, brunched at the new Blossoming Lotus,  sold cookies at Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti, and had a super fantastic meeting with my friend Janessa for a secret big project we’ll be announcing later in the month. !!! I also found a bit of time to feed my cats and do one mere load of laundry, score!

Over all, one of the best and classiest vegan brunch experiences I’ve ever had.  Hands down the best in Portland so far.

The excitement never ends about Taqueria Los Gorditos.  It’s in my hood!

Would you believe this is my first actual burrito from Gorditos? You should believe it, because it’s true. I hear they make their own soyrizo now.  I’m on a Soy Curl kick, myself.

I have social anxiety over making pretty things for bake sales, so I went with something I knew, and that was meant to be over-baked!

Onto the Bake Sale!

Insane amount of donations, insane amount of love, insane amount of purchases!  Isa’s idea was beautiful – last time I checked, the grand total for these nationwide, DIY vegan bake sales was over 32k! Portland topped 3k, alone!

For most of the day, there were 4 tables: $2, $3, $4, and COOKIE.

Some pretty scones and coconut cupcakes made their way to the cookie table.

sorta boring, mostly great & a segue

Roasted Blue Potatoes, Golden Beets and a single Russet, with coarse sea salt, olive oil and pepper. Roasted Colors

I’ll take golden beets over red any day, any place, any time zone, as long as there’s a working oven.

Huckleberry’s Bistro style Tofu Scramble with Italian kale, green cabbage, kalamata olives, yellow bell pepper, creminis, lemon juice, shoyu, garlic and spices.  I like this style because it channels the scrambles I used to make as a young vegan, over-relying on soy sauce for flavor!

olive, lemon veggie scramble

Lightly fried rice with broccoli, carrots, Zesty Lemon Tempehtations (in my freezer from an old product review), leftover brown rice, sesame oil, almonds, tamari, garlic and white pepper.  Definitely a ‘what do I have to work with??’ type of dinner.

light fried rice with tempeh

Total Hodgepodge dinner.  Steamed spinach, baked tofu, kalamata olives and roasted chickpeas (loosely based on Tamari Roasted Chickpeas from Eat, Drink & Be Vegan).

Not boring – just great! Lazy Samoans (with even lazier chocolate drizzlin’ and dippin’) from Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar

My recent flickr stream informs me that I’ve been saving money by cooking at home lately!  As much as I enjoy visiting new and old favorite establishments and socializing, I’m part hermit cat lady and have been spending time the past couple weeks enjoying fortunate holds on dvds the library (30 Rock! LOST! The Departed!)!

Isn’t that a swell segue for mention of a presentation I’m giving on this site and Local & Vegan Eating in Portland later this month at the library? Sure! I’m flattered that the library likes vegan bloggers! I’m flattered if one of my friends even half considers going!

Here’s the Multnomah County Library Events listing and the Facebook Event. I’m working on my comical winks all afternoon in preparation.

Saturday is for Cookies (in Portland, of course)

There are two vegan cookie events taking place on Saturday in Portland. What is the world coming to?  Cookies. Vegan Cookies. And Vegan Mania.

Ode to Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar Testing

Behold, Irish Whiskey Cremes

I hope you can handle this oncoming sweet food porn extravaganza. I hope you like cookies.
It’s time to collect the photos and memories of the past two years’ worth of recipe testing for the latest Post Punk Kitchen authors classic: Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar by Isa Chandra Moskowtiz and Terry Hope Romero.

Testing for this book happened along with testing for Vegan Brunch, and I’m currently testing for Isa’s current project, a weight loss cookbook! Go figure, after cupcakes and cookies.
I adored recipe testing once again for these ladies, and bombarding everyone I know with cookies during the process. Check out the cute tester photos in the back! Not mine, I totally missed the thread on this possibility, or you would have seen one of my cats sniffing a cookie…

And look, it’s Terry! With an adorable apron working on a cookie photo shoot for the book.

I don’t think I can pick a favorite. Or favorites.
The Citrus Glitters, Irish Whiskey Cremes, Milanos and Cranberry White Chocolate Biscotti stick out in my mind – but then there’s the Black & White! I grew up with those cookies!
In short, if you like cookies of the vegan persuasion, you should get this book.
